Safeguard - 2XU Sole Racing Leg 3

The last leg of the Safeguard/2XU Sole Racing International Half Marathon was held last October 27 at Nuvali. This newest addition to the Run Rio line up is also composed of the first leg on April and the second leg on August. Once again, I am honored to invited to this event.

Pre-race

Since this leg's venue is in Nuvali, Noel, Rolly, CJ and I decided to spend the night in Sta. Rosa instead of travelling in the wee hours of the night to arrive in the race venue. We avoided that stress and was well rested in our hotel. We even had the luxury of celebrating Rolly's bday at Solenad.

Post Bday Treat at Solenad

In terms of training, I am out of it. After finishing the Run United Philippine Marathon a few weeks ago, all the training I did was a short holiday run. I even skipped one of the most memorable race of the year, Rexona Run 'coz I choose to sleep and be rested.

Actual Race

We were up before the 3am assembly at the football field area in Nuvali. It was easy to find a parking spot and we were off to the starting line after we spotted our other blogger friends.

Ready for Leg 3

As the gun was shot at 4am, everyone was running in race mode. The crowd was a smaller compared to the usual run rio races which is a signature trait of this newest trilogy. Therefore, you cannot slow down or you'll be at the end of the pack. I wanted to maintain my 2:30-2:40 time so I decided to do 4-1 in the first 8 miles and run magic mile until finish line. I was pacing with CJ at the 1st kilometer when I urged him to chase Sir Rene who was running faster than we were. It was still dark and I lost CJ before the 3rd kilometer. For the rest of the race, I was chasing Sir Rene. He was faster than he was a year ago with all the training he was doing. (IDOL, Sir Rene!)

Eto naman pala yung finish line photo

Running in Nuvali was a delight as I get to remember one of the most memorable races in my life, my first marathon. At the first three kilometers, all I could remember was running TBRDM. I remember the worry I was feeling and getting over that feeling as I finished. I remember that there was a pitstop in that area. I remembered worrying since I did too much running at the endless downhill. I remember when Coach Lit suggested we walk in uphills at the u-turn towards the endless downhill. At the endless uphill, I remembered not hitting a wall at the 32nd kilometer and getting worried that my friends were getting bored at the finish line. At the 15th kilometer, I remember seeing the rainbow after I hit my runner's wall.

The last 4 or 5 kilometers was a different experience. The route was a series of seemingly endless right and left turns. It was at this time that I lost hope of getting a sub-2:30 time and just wanted to finish as soon as possible. The maze made us go round and round that I didn't believe it when the turn would lead to the last few meters.

Hitting the stop button,
getting ready for my moment na wala naman pala.

The last few meters brought me memories of my marathon finish that I was expecting that the ribbon at the finish line would be a great photo opportunity. I demanded that the ribbon be put up when I finished that I wasted a few seconds waiting for the attendants to pick it up. Only to find out that no one is taking the photos. (So napahiya lang ako...)

Update: Anduon pala si Mang Ernie so di nasayang ang effort ko... Thanks to Noel for tagging!

Ang "Moment ko 'to" Eksena...

I finished at 2:39 according to my garmin the slowest of all the 3 legs. I attribute this to lack of conditioning for the rolling hills of Nuvali.

Post Race

We finished the program just like we did in leg 2. They awarded the Kenyans and the Filipinos who won the open and the Filipino categories. They also awarded the fastest man and woman for each age category. We also witnessed the lucky runners who took home Timex watches and luxury trips to Malaysia.

Bloggers at the activity area

Then, it was off to breakfast with my blogger friends. It was an enlightening discussion as we talked about a number of things. We also wished Ibet on his ING NYC Marathon journey. (Good Luck, Ibet!)

Race Review

Sole Racing Leg 3 was a great race just like the other legs. It was a green run so we had to bring our hydration bottles. All through the course, the hydration was a choice of Gatorade and water. And they were abundant and cold. The marshals were present in the confusing part of the race route.

Bloggers after the race

The RunRio 2XU freebies were great. They had us choose colors for our new calf guard, new visor and new cap. In addition, there are slippers and a water bottle. I will definitely use these items in another race.

Congratulations to the finishers!

Thanks to Run Rio, Safeguard and 2XU for making this run a great event!

Choosing to do Crossfit

Earlier this year, I was in search of leveling up from circuit training. As I continued training in that discipline, the easier it became for me to do. And when it became easy, I started to looking for other activities in greater intensity.

Then, Crossfit arrived in Makati. My initial experience were trial classes in the Legazpi Park c/o CFMNL Makati. I first thought it was like circuit training until they asked us to do AMRAP(as many rounds as possible), team and partner WODs (Workout of the Day). It was unlike any training I tried before.

Then, I was invited to join the GNC Fitness Throwdown. It was difficult for someone who rarely uses big weights in his workouts but still fun even if I finished in the bottom 10%. Despite that, this activity cemented my interest in Crossfit and I decided to join a box (Crossfit gym). Since the investment in joining a box is greater than my old gym, it took me a while to finally decide to join and which box to attend classes in.

The Deal Grocer deals for CFMNL and Crossfit Mad Minute

In the process of tweaking my budget to include the membership rate of a box, I discovered 2 deals from DealGrocer.com that helped me save a few bucks. The first one was a 5 session deal for CFMNL Makati and a 1 month membership and foundations class deal for Crossfit Mad Minute. It was such a great deal as it gave the opportunity to try out the gyms I was choosing between.

I eventually chose to try at CFMNL first since that was a shorter duration and they didn't require foundations then. I tried the 7am class. The crowd was friendly and the experience was fun and challenging. We were to use the foam roller before 7am when we do our warm ups together. Warmup in CFMNL starts with a 150m run then we do drills as the coach instruct. These would include dynamic warmups like high knees, burpees, pushups, butt kicks and other dynamic warmup exercises. We would then do stretching. Then, it was off to skill practice. I was able to do dead lifts, power cleans and floor presses during my stay. To end the session, it was a 10-15 minute WOD. I particularly remember a WOD that required us to do wall balls, medicine ball cleans and burpees that left me sore in the legs for days. At end of the session, we were to do our own cool down or continue training in the box.

CFMNL Makati

Due to a new work schedule, it took me a month before I found a schedule to attend the foundations class in Crossfit Mad Minute. I was expecting an hour class of weight training so I scheduled circuit training in between sessions (the class was on Tuesdays so I planned to do circuit training on Wednesdays then class again on Thursdays). The class did cover 12 core movements of training in this box but to my surprise, we end the sessions with WODs. I eventually had to cancel my scheduled training as WODs makes you take a beating that you would need rest the next day. The WODs were easier compared to the regular WODs we would witness before our classes begin. The foundations were a great transition from working out in a regular gym to doing WODs regularly and it was an opportunity to meet eventual box mates who will be working out with you.

First Month in Crossfit Mad Minute

A few days after finishing the foundations classes, I started my first month in Crossfit Mad Minute. I chose to attend the 6am class. Some of my batch mates also chose to attend the same class so it was nice to see familiar faces in the classes. We started the workout with warm-up on our own using a prescribed list of exercises and stretches. We start with foam rolling as taught in the foundations class. Then, we perform a set of exercises on our own.

We begin the actual workout with skills with a barbell or gymnastics using our body weight. The progression of the weights is dependent on the coach's suggestion. The classes size is less than 10 so the coach will be able to keep track of your form and your sets.

Foundations Class at Mad Minute

Then, there comes the WOD which would be a series of exercises done in AMRAP (as many rounds as possible), for Time, as many reps for a minute, end a round within a minute from 10 rounds and others. The difficulty is different each day and the WOD can be done in 4 different scales.

Lastly, we end a session with a cool down stretch.

I attended classes as regularly as I could. I did WODs on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. In the process, I saw myself getting stronger with the numbers I am able to lift in different skills. I also get stuck on certain movements with little progression but that just makes me want to improve more. In addition, it's great to be 5 minutes away from the box.

Filipina defends her title in the adidas King of the Road Finals

Press Release

Grand finale of the adidas King of the Road 2013 held in Malaysia last October 20, 2013

Petaling Jaya, 20th October 2013 – Filipina runner Mary Grace Delos Santos was recently crowned Queen of the Road in the final leg of the adidas King of the Road (KOTR) South East Asia, clocking in 1 hour and 3 minutes for the 16.8km distance.

Passion and determination filled the air when 11,000 runners came together in Malaysia to participate in the last leg of this year’s adidas King of the Road. Held along the New Pantai Expressway Highway, the run marks the 15th edition which was officially flagged off by Y. Bhg. Dato' Mohd Shafiq B. Abdullah of the Ministry of Works.

The run, which has a unique elevated route across three key districts - Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur, also played host as the final leg of the prestigious running event

The top two reigning champions from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia came together to compete for this year’s Regional adidas KOTR run, with the crown going to Sgt Boonthung Srisung of Thailand who completed the 16.8K SEA men’s category run in 52 minutes and 35 seconds and Delos Santos of the Philippines for the women’s category.

Delos Santos earned her ticket to the finals by being the defending champion of last year’s adidas KOTR Southeast Asia in Singapore. Fellow Filipinos Eduardo Buenavista and Mary Joy Tabal also joined her in the 16.8K run by being the first place finishers in their respective categories in the Philippine leg of the KOTR this year. Tabal finished strong, only a minute behind Delos Santos.

The theme for this year’s race is ‘Boost your run’, inspired by the latest adidas BOOST™ foam innovation which has revolutionized the running world with its debut in the market earlier this year. The new adidas BOOST™ range features groundbreaking cushioning technology, which provides the highest energy return in the running industry.

adidas has a long standing history in running and athletics dating back to 1928 when its founder, Adi Dassler, supplied Una Radke with a handmade pair of spikes to wear during the Olympic Games in Amsterdam. Many more heroes of athletics have followed including Jesse Owens, Emil Ziltopek, Al Oerter, Bob Beamon, Daley Thompson, Grete Waitz, Heike Henkel and Haile Gebrselassie.

adidas introduces the new CRAZYCOOL line of shoes featuring climacool® technology

Press Release

Manila, October 21, 2013 – adidas is excited to introduce the new CRAZYCOOL to the next generation of runners who value maximum flexibility, breathability and comfort. Featuring climacool® technology, the new CRAZYCOOL spots an improved flexible design and construction, an all-around 360-degree ventilation, as well as a high flex midsole to create a dynamic look and fit.

The superior functionality and performance of the CRAZYCOOL line can be attributed to its unique blend of quality material and exquisite design. Constructed to create the ultimate freedom for the movement of your feet, the shoe features anatomical flex grooves, which facilitate smooth transition while running.

The unique upper construction of the CRAZYCOOL with the adidas CoolFrame® material ensures lightweight upper support and increased upper breathability while air channels in the sole allow airflow throughout. An enhanced offer from its predecessor climacool® range, the new and improved CRAZYCOOL boasts a thin micro suede tongue that makes the shoes even lighter. An in-built ADIWEAR™ outsole also boosts durability in high wear areas.

Since its introduction in 2011, the adidas climacool® has remained one of adidas’ best-selling product concepts worldwide. This revolutionary technology was later incorporated into multiple adidas running footwear lines such as the CC Revolution, the CC Ride and the CC Chill. Climacool® material was developed by adidas to reduce in-shoe moisture by 20 per cent and foot temperature by 12 per cent, thereby improving runners’ comfort level and performance as high humidity and temperature in shoes is one of the main causes of discomfort.

The adidas CRAZYCOOL is available in a wide range of colorways and retails for Php5495 in adidas Sports Performance and retail stores.

Cobra launches new variant to boost immune system

Press Release

Cobra Defense now available in the market

(Manila, Philippines) The country’s number 1 energy drink launches its newest variant, Cobra Defense, for Filipinos who get the job done, whatever it takes. This latest offering is the first of its kind to provide energy to keep up for a whole day’s work, with its main property of strengthening your body’s immune system.

The demands of today’s dynamic lifestyle constantly push us to the limit, regardless of its detrimental effects on our health. Excessive stress, bad eating habits, overtime work, and abrupt changes in temperature are primary causes that weaken the body’s natural defense to fight common viral infections and chronic illness such as pulmonary imbalances.

Aside from our lifestyle, the changing weather also affects our body. During the rainy season, sudden changes in weather causes fluctuations in the body’s temperature. This then also weakens our immune system, making it easier for the body to catch colds, cough, and flu. This results in runny nose, nasal congestions, body pains and headache.

Cobra Defense is the only drink that contains a special combination of ingredients called Vitaboosters: a blend of Vitamin B Complex that releases energy from food, as well as Vitamins A, C, D, E and Zinc to aid in building immunity. This special mix has properties to fight off common viruses and bacteria, with antioxidants to remove free radicals and improve the healthy functions of muscles, nerves, and the heart.

For demanding workloads, excessive school requirements, active and involved schedules, especially during the rainy season, Cobra Defense is the energy drink to ensure you will not be stopped from accomplishing more in a day. Cobra Defense is now available in all 7-11 stores nationwide.

adiZero Primeknit now available in new exciting colours this season

Press Release

Manila, October 15th, 2013: The new adiZero Primeknit 2.0, the first one-piece upper Performance running shoe, is being rolled out in new exciting colours this Fall/Winter season for both men and women.

Using the latest design tools with a new seamless engineering technology, adidas has created a first-of-its-kind running shoe. While traditional sports shoes are constructed from several different pieces, this breakthrough method digitally knits the entire upper in just one pieceKnitting fused yarn fine-tunes the exact amount of flexibility and support needed in every part of the shoe. There is no lining or reinforcements – the strength comes from the fused yarn, digitally-knitted in distinct grid patterns to provide ventilation. This all means lightweight comfort that wraps seamlessly around your foot, whilst fewer materials produce less waste.

James Carnes, Head of Design for Sport Performance at adidas, said, “We are constantly innovating to bring superior performance products to the greatest athletes in the world.  In designing the adizero Primeknit, our goal was to completely rethink how footwear is engineered, with a keen eye on sustainable construction.  This revolutionary design will forever change the way we engineer shoes, combining both premium innovation and maximum performance benefits.”

The adiZero Primeknit collection will be available at adidas Bonifacio Global City starting October 18, 2013 at PHP8295. A total of six colorways will launch in the Philippines, starting with the White and Pink models, followed by four more in November to January 2014.
